A 14 appliance carries approximately 1000 litres of water, and is a 4 wheel drive capable vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 5 tonnes or greater. They are of a Dual Cab design for comfort and safety considerations.

A 14 appliance is generally suited for all terrain combating grass, scrub and bushfires. However there are several different types of 14 appliances, depending upon the individual brigade's requirements

All 14 appliances carry equipment for combating rural fires, with some having capabilities of providing a Compressed Air / Foam (CAFS) mix to extend its water capabilities.
