The first step to becoming a CFS Volunteer is to choose the brigade to join. Because of the emergency nature of the CFS, you generally need to live or work nearby the fire station. Some brigades have specific time limits on how far away you can be from the station. You will need to check with the individual brigades on their requirements.
![]() There are some brigades that do not require an immediate response to an incident, where living or working nearby is not a requirement of membership. These brigades include the Mt Lofty Fire Tower brigade, Regional Operations brigades, and Communications Logistics brigades.
Once you have selected the brigade you are interested in, follow the information listed on this website contact them, or attend at a training night. Be aware that some brigades have waiting lists for membership, or have an intake system at certain times of the year, so don't be disappointed if you can't sign up on the night!
