2006 Australasian Road Crash Symposium
Submitted On Thursday, June 22, 2006
Submitted By CFS

Adelaide will host a national Symposium to address how Australia’s emergency services can better respond to and manage road crash and other critical incidents.

Anyone who shares an interest in managing emergency incidents effectively and efficiently is encouraged to attend the Symposium, which will be held at the Wayville Showgrounds on Thursday 20 July.

The theme to this year’s Symposium is ‘Looking After Ourselves’.

Who Should Attend?

· Volunteer and career personnel who make up Australia’s rescue services

· Safety wardens

· OH&S officers and

· other professionals associated with road crash and other critical incidents.

Not all incidents conclude within a few hours. The explosion at Gladstone, the cyclone in Queensland and the mine rescue in Tasmania are three of many recent examples that typify protracted emergency relief efforts.

For the rescue crews and personnel involved in these incidents, and the communities of which they form part, there is not always the opportunity or ability to go home and ‘switch off’.

The Symposium is structured to assist everyone involved in these critical services and will include presentations from keynote speakers providing information on current emergency management practice. They include:

Prof. Sandy McFarlane Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Adelaide

Prof. Drew Dawson Nationally and internationally recognised as an expert in the areas of sleep research and fatigue in the workplace

Dr. Robyn Robinson Clinical Psychologist and President of the Critical Incident Stress Management Foundation of Australia

Dr. Michelle Tuckey Lecturer at the School of Psychology, University of South Australia and a member of the Centre of Applied Psychological Research

An additional part to the Symposium will be a segment on ‘Heavy Rescue’, which will present the findings of ‘Exercise Edge’ - an exercise conducted by emergency services in Adelaide last month, which measured the effects of a passenger transport bus being rolled over a steep embankment.

The 2006 Symposium will be held in the Ridley Pavilion at the Wayville Showgrounds from 9am - 5pm on Thursday 20 July .
Lunch and refreshments included. Registration is $100 per person and can be obtained by downloading a registration form

Additional Features

A Swap Meet for those interested in collecting and swapping emergency services badges, patches etc. will be held at 7.30pm on Friday 21 July at the Grosvenor Hotel. Tickets are $35, which includes a buffet dinner.

The Symposium and Swap Meet are both part of the program for the 2006 Australasian Road Crash Rescue Challenge, which will be held in the Wayville Pavilion at the Wayville Showgrounds Friday 21 - Sunday 23 July.

The Australasian event, which comes to South Australia only every 7 or 8 years, features the best of Australia and New Zealand’s road crash rescue crews, and is the prelude to the World Rescue Challenge to be held in Cape Town in October 2006.

The public is invited to watch the Challenge, which will commence from 9am daily over the three days. General entry to the Challenge is $5 per person (or a gold coin donation for emergency service personnel).

The three-day Challenge will conclude with a closing ceremony and awards presentation dinner at 7pm Sunday 23 July at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Tickets are $70.
