Hazmat Support Appliance
CFS has a specialist Hazmat Support appliance based at Burnside and provides a State Support during incidents involving Hazardous Materials, such as Road Crashes, Industrial Accidents and spills involving toxic substances. It can be deployed to provide additional equipment and personnel to an incident. The equipment carried on this appliance includes some sophisticated detection equipment, which are taken into an suspect area, to assist in the identification of a substance. This can assist the crews to identify a substance, and hence determine the safest way of dealing with it. In addition to the Specialist Hazmat, some brigades carry basic Hazmat equipment and extra Breathing Apparatus sets on their standard appliance - often a 34 or 34P. Several brigades have a Hazmat trailer, which carries extra equipment to deal with Hazmats.
