Lyndoch Brigade - 1975 to Present

The Lyndoch Emergency & Fire Service (EFS) was formed when a concerned group of local farmers and town residents decided to initiate and form a fire fighting organisation in March 1975.

The Emergency & Fire Service (EFS) was renamed the Country Fire Service (CFS) in 1977.

The Brigades first Captain was Winston Daly, from March 1975 to August 1991.

The Lyndoch CFS Brigade occupies the original site when first formed, at 33 Gilbert Street, Lyndoch, sharing amenities with the Barossa Council's Lyndoch Maintenance Depot.

The first appliance was an International D1410 vehicle purchased for the Brigade by a grant of $18,000.00 being allocated from the then District Council of Barossa.

The $18,000.00 was not only to purchase and set up a type 24 appliance (2000 litre, four-wheel drive), but also enable a shed to be constructed to house the appliance.

As was the case with other EFS Brigades, all of the bodywork and plumbing fabrication for the fire appliance also the structural and internal fittings for the station were undertaken by the dedicated group of original members.

The International D1410, was sold and replaced in January 1991 by a modern Hino GT 175 type 34 appliance (3000 litre, four-wheel drive), the current LYNDOCH 34.

The International D1410 appliance returned to the Lyndoch Brigade in February 1993 as a result of council amalgamations, giving the Lyndoch CFS Brigade two appliances, LYNDOCH 34 and LYNDOCH 24.

LYNDOCH 24 was replaced in November 1995 with a Ford F350 type 14 appliance (1000 litre, four-wheel drive) LYNDOCH 14, as a result of the CFS policy regarding the replacement of vehicles after 20 years of service.

The change to an F350 was also helped by changes occurring within neighbouring brigades where appliances and equipment were also being upgraded.

A further policy change required that appliances are diesel powered and as a result, the F350 type14 was replaced in December 2000 with a Mitsubishi Dual Cabin Canter, the current LYNDOCH 14.

Today...

The brigade currently has about 28 firefighters and a small number of Operational Support members with other community members working in non-operational areas together with landholders who operate private units to support the Lyndoch CFS Brigade.

The Lyndoch 34 and 14 appliances are equipped with, compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA), 240v generator plants, flood lights, chainsaw, Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) Fan and other equipment to operate safely and effectively at the many and varied incidents the CFS attends.

Due to the number and frequency of vehicle accidents occurring in the area, additional cupboard space was fitted to LYNDOCH 14 to stow a set of Rapid Intervention Rescue Equipment.

This equipment was purchased with the assistance of the Community and the Lyndoch CFS Brigade fund raising over the years, as a result of the need for this type of equipment being identified due to

The Lyndoch CFS Brigade has consistently responded to over a hundred (100) calls each financial year since 2002/2003. This compares to the 10 calls per year in the late 1970's and early 1980's, to the 20 calls per year in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Organisation…

The Lyndoch CFS Brigade is a part of the Barossa CFS Group, which is part of Region 2 in the State CFS Organisation.

Neville Kies is the current Captain of the LYNDOCH CFS Brigade, only the second captain in the history of the Brigade.

The President of the Brigade is Brenton Edwards and the administration officer is Jacque Edwards.

The Lyndoch CFS Brigade covers an area bounded by the North Para River, the Barossa Ranges west of the Lyndoch township, an area east of the Barossa Gold Fields and Sandy Creek. The area to the south includes Miamba and Sugar Loaf towards Williamstown.

The areas include the townships of Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Rosedale and Cockatoo Valley. The area is diverse and includes rural, residential also industrial sites such as The Orlando Visitors Centre, Orlando Wyndham Wines, Miranda Wines, Yaldara Wines and many other smaller wineries.
