Hoyleton Brigade - 1968 to Present

Hoyleton Emergency Fire Service (EFS) first began on September 25, 1968, when a public meeting was held, proposing a Fire Fighting Association, with Jack Berry elected as the first president.

They purchased their first fire unit soon after, a four tonne truck, with a Rex pump and 400 gallon tank. A sub-committee was formed to set out safety instructions for householders.

“Nothing much has changed – it is now Balaklava and Hoyleton setting out guidelines for the Halbury community,” Reg said in his report.

On October 7, 1969 the unit was commssioned by EFS Director, Mr F.L. Kerr. The official crew in khaki overalls that day were K Lamshed, H Simon, K Jericho, R Redpath, W Reinke, and B Sandow. Private units formed a guard of honor. J Rowland was MC for the official ceremony.

Much has happened since those early days – fire phones in 1971, to help gather a crew; a VHF radion in 1973; a new unit in 1991, Hoyleton 2 4; members attended the Sydney fires in 1994 and on Kangaroo Island in 2008.
