A Light Rural (LR) appliance carries approximately 500 litres of water, is a 4 wheel drive capable vehicle and can be in a dual cab arrangement. As a rule, they only carry 2 members, and they can also be utilised as a command vehicle, or assist in logistics work.

A LR appliance is generally suited for all terrain combating grass, scrub and bushfires. The chassis GVM will be under 5 tonnes for this type of appliance.
